Tu lu’s is perhaps my husband and my cousins’ favorite place. Where else can they get gluten-free cup cakes? Ok, I like this place too! :-) So I went there a few times, and will continue to visit Tu Lu’s every time I visit NYC. Perhaps because I believe in fairy tales and that Cupcakes Grow on Trees – tu-lu’s Gluten-free Bakery. Enjoy!

Tu-lu's doesn't offer as many vegan options as some other bakeries in the area, but the fact that they offer vegan gluten-free baked goods makes them worth noting. Very few vegan desserts in NYC are gluten-free, unless you want to get a raw item, or possibly some ice cream, but gluten-free, vegan baked goods are very hard to come by and Tu-lu's fills that void.

I stopped in the other night and grabbed a couple sweets, including their chocolate chip/cherry/oatmeal cookie and was very impressed. The texture wasn't as good as a gluten item, but gluten-free baking is incredibly difficult so I was satisfied with texture and flavor.

The chocolate muffin/cupcake thing was a different story, however. It had a really good, moist texture and a rich chocolate taste, but there was a subtle, yet pungent underlying flavor like onion or something. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but it was quite unpleasant. I wonder if they used chickpea flour in this recipe, as I know that raw chickpea flour tastes utterly disgusting, so perhaps that's also the case for fully cooked items containing too much chickpea flour and not enough other flours (rice, almond, whatever). I'm hoping this was a one-time flop and I'd be willing to re-visit and try it again.
