LOVE it. I went to Udupi for a couple years thinking it was ohhh-kay, but finally discovered I was just ordering the wrong dishes! Now it's my favorite place. Also, recently they renovated and have a fresh, clean look with improved restrooms.

Everything vegan is clearly labeled. I love the Chili Gobi (also called gobi manchurian, the same dish without green bell peppers) and many dosai (savory crepes). Sometimes they bring yogurt raita, so vegans should request no yogurt when ordering (especially for chili gobi). The lunch buffet on the weekend is great and 95% - 100% vegan; the weekday lunch buffet is so so, but slightly cheaper than weekend.

We went for the weekend lunch buffet. All the vegan items were clearly marked, and most of the buffet was vegan.

I loved basically every single thing I had, except for the vada, which really need to be served fresh. The chole peshawari and the dosa were the two highlights. The chole had a great combination of spices. The dosa filling was absolutely fantastic, some of the best I've had.

Overall, this was a great deal, and I'd come back next time I'm in Phoenix.

I felt so spoiled after eating here with my brother. The buffet was massive and so were my eyes. I've eaten many an Indian dish in my 40+ yrs and I have to say, they introduced me to several new ones, including desserts I'd never seen before. Definitely a treat! But, my belly couldn't keep up and I hurt for the rest of the day. :) I will have to control myself next time.

I have been going to Udupi for 4 years off and on. Although there were some problems with food quality several years ago, the food has improved since then. However, the buffet on the weekend can be repetitive with many of the same choices week to week. If you go on a holiday like Easter or Christmas, the buffet will be bigger with more choices. The main reason I go back is the wide array of clearly marked vegan food. I tend to get a dosa and sambar because the combination of these two foods is just perfect! I also like that you can take the buffet to go - they give you one big and one little styrofoam container and 2 little plastic containers for all of your food.

I have eaten at the lunch buffet several times in the last two months. Outstanding Indian food: the dishes are beautifully spiced and vegetables are fresh and bright. There's heat but not too much. Spread out a selection of curries in individual silver cups, order a glass of mango juice on ice and have fun. About $12 for the lunch buffet -- a real deal given the quality of the food. This place ought to be packed but it isn't--at least not when I was there. Do enough people know about this restaurant? I hope it can stay open in this economy. I'll be doing my part.

Taste of food is great. They serve real south indian style food.Chettinad dosai with Sambar and Kaara chutney(red), Rasam as an appetizer,Biriyani, side dishes for Naan and mango milk shake are great here. Service is good and place is clean as well.

I love this place for Indian food. Honestly I don't know what I've ordered here by it's "official name" maybe "thali" but I tell the server I'm vegan and would like the veg combo plate.... and so far it has been fabulous each time. Sooo many little dishes that are all vegan AND tasty. I feel like a cow, so much to taste, so much I want to eat! The service is friendly and prompt. I live about 30 minutes away but the commute is worth it... everytime. The lunch buffet is great here too.

Recently the management has changed. We can see lots of improvement. The quality of the food is good and variety in the buffet. If the new management can do some more changes, they will be the best

Udupi is the best Indian food restaurant in town. I've never had a bad meal with them. The Chili Gobi is one of the best, and their dosas are always a treat. I would def. go out of your way to go here (they're right along bus route 72). Check for their times before going. Also, they have buffets quite a bit, and are worth it if you have the cash (or card). I recommend going both times of day (lunch/dinner).

Their weekend buffet is absolutely amazing. It is nearly all vegan, with the vegan dishes labeled as such. I find myself with frequent Udupi cravings -- definitely the best Indian food I've ever had. The vast majority of the dishes on the buffet line have some heat, so beware. I give it a 9 because the restaurant's not entirely vegan and because of the price of the buffet ($11 before tip).

Note: According to the most recent (June 2007) Maricopa County health inspector's report, Udupi is doing better, as the establishment received a silver award and there is no mention of cockroaches.

Food was good until I saw some the place. It is not maintained properly and I saw bugs(roaches) crawling around the place.

Udupi food is definitely having the stamp of indian taste and spices. Above that the manager is a humble person, once I ordered manchurian and my wife could not eat it due to extra spices which we are not used to in USA. The manager replaced it with some other dish (as per our request again) without any question with big smile and when we tried to pay for it he refused. I have been in USA for quite sometime and I have not seen this kind of service.

Keep it up, good food, good management.

Definitely it's not a rip-off place, food @ genuine price.

Best vegetarian food ever!!! Me and my girlfriend go at least once a week ...she loves it, even though she is American.

The dosas and Chilli gobi are my favorites. I would like to add one thing though, it seems sometimes the taste of the food changes dramatically and unfortunately towards the down side. It seems their main cook takes a leave occasionally. It doesn't happens quite often, but its annoying whenever it does.

Other than that, its the best Indian food I have had in the entire US!!!

Have eaten there about 5 times so far. Buffet was about 10 items, 9 of which were vegan. Excellent food - in particular the Vegetable Vindaloo. Best veggie Indian I've had.

I had a lunch several days ago and was pleasantly surprised by the tranquility, cleanliness and aromas this place was exuding. A recent lover of Indian food and a vegetarian for two years I’m so happy to have found such a nice spot in town. Comparing to Pasand /Baseline and McClintock/ and Copper Kettle /Lemon and Terrace/ this becomes my personal favorite due to high standards of culinary, service and ambiance in blend.
