Entirely vegetarian Southern Indian food

Restaurant, Coffee/Tea/Juice, Caterer

Udupi is an nice-looking place on the inside with great Vegetarian food.

What separates Udupi from all other Indian restaurants in town is that the menu is entirely Vegetarian (with many VEGAN options) and the list of choices is enormous.

For example, there are 16 different appetizers (with such delights as lentils, potatoes, chick peas); there's 3 Vegetarian/lentil soups; 3 combination platters; 17 different types of Dosai (wheat and rice crepes filled with onions, potatoes, cauliflower, tomatoes, and more!); as well as 42 other entrees (featuring a wide variety of vegetables, eggplant, okra, lentils, chick peas, and rice). Plus there are 8 different kinds of bread on the menu, including whole wheat.

And if that's not enough, try one of the delectable 10 different desserts (consisting of fruit, almonds, honey, and rice).

The best value is the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet because of all the vegetarian items ($8.99).

Udupi also serves up a humongous and terrific brunch buffet on on Sat., Sun., and holidays ($11.99).

LOVE it. I went to Udupi for a couple years thinking it was ohhh-kay, but finally discovered I was just ordering the wrong dishes! Now it's my favorite place. Also, recently they renovated and have a fresh, clean look with improved restrooms.

Everything vegan is clearly labeled. I love the Chili Gobi (also called gobi manchurian, the same dish without green bell peppers) and many dosai (savory crepes). Sometimes they bring yogurt raita, so vegans should request no yogurt when ordering (especially for chili gobi). The lunch buffet on the weekend is great and 95% - 100% vegan; the weekday lunch buffet is so so, but slightly cheaper than weekend.

We went for the weekend lunch buffet. All the vegan items were clearly marked, and most of the buffet was vegan.

I loved basically every single thing I had, except for the vada, which really need to be served fresh. The chole peshawari and the dosa were the two highlights. The chole had a great combination of spices. The dosa filling was absolutely fantastic, some of the best I've had.

Overall, this was a great deal, and I'd come back next time I'm in Phoenix.
